Railcar of the 798 series
The Uerdingen wagon factory near Krefeld produced large series of twin-engine rail buses on behalf of the German Federal Railway in the 1950s and 1960s. The rail buses, also known as "Uerdingen rail buses", enabled the extensive rationalisation of rail transport in rural areas and contributed to the preservation of many branch lines. It was not until the year 2000 that Deutsche Bahn's scheduled service ended.
All 98s are equipped with a reinforced frame and standard draw and buffing gear so that shunting work can be carried out and passenger or freight wagons can be carried, for example in general cargo and express services.
