Description

Travelling nostalgically ...

From December 2011 to March 2024, the Wisenta Valley Railway Promotion Association offered excursion trains between Schönberg in western Saxony and Schleiz in eastern Thuringia. The almost 15 km long line through the Wisenta valley has been closed since mid-March 2024. The association is endeavouring to reopen the line once operated by the Royal Saxon State Railways.

The association's vehicles are currently housed in the Gera railway worlds, from where special trips are organised. It is also possible to hire the train, which combines a nostalgic feel with modern comfort to create a special travelling experience. The train consists of two railcars and a driving trailer and can carry around 110 passengers.

Railway line

Railway line - Wisenta Valley Railway

The Schönberg (Vogtl) - Schleiz branch line has connected Saxony and Thuringia since 1887. Regular passenger services operated until 2006.

In cooperation between the Wisentatalbahn development association and a railway company, the entire line was reopened as a public railway in December 2012. After that, historic railcars rolled through the beautiful Wisenta valley for almost twelve years until 2024.

Today, the Oberland cycle path to the Bleiloch dam runs along the former small railway line to Saalburg and the Oberland bus service in Schleiz West offers connections to the trains of the Wisenta Valley Railway for travellers to Burgk Castle and Saalburg on the Thuringian Sea.

The association is endeavouring to reactivate the Schönberg - Schleiz line.

Railcar of the 798 series

The Uerdingen wagon factory near Krefeld produced large series of twin-engine rail buses on behalf of the German Federal Railway in the 1950s and 1960s. The rail buses, also known as "Uerdingen rail buses", enabled the extensive rationalisation of rail transport in rural areas and contributed to the preservation of many branch lines. It was not until the year 2000 that Deutsche Bahn's scheduled service ended.
All 98s are equipped with a reinforced frame and standard draw and buffing gear so that shunting work can be carried out and passenger or freight wagons can be carried, for example in general cargo and express services.

Railcar 798 813, manufacturer Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, built in 1962, Deutsche Bundesbahn as VT 798 813 in passenger service until 1984, used as an industrial railcar after conversion and modernisation. It has been in service on the Wisentatalbahn since 5 September 2014. It offers approx. 25 to 30 seats, some of which are arranged at small tables.

It has been available to the Wisentatalbahn development association since 2016. It has 54 seats for passengers.

Control car 998 633, manufacturer Gebrüder Credé in Kassel-Niederzwehren, built in 1957, Deutsche Bundesbahn as VS 798 633 until 1991, Dürener Kreisbahn as VS 251 from 1993 to 1996, DRE as number VS 998 01. The car with driver's cab has no engines and is used to control the railcars in the same train set.
